A new monument has been added to the Colonial Zones list of many monuments. This is a new statue of one of the Founding Fathers of Dominican Republic, General Matías Ramón Mella. It was placed to commemorate the day of his birth on February 25th.
The new monument is located at the Puerta de la Misericordia/ Gate of Mercy on Calle Palo Hincado and the corner of Calle Arzobispo Portes along the far wall of the Colonial City. (see map #72). This new statue replaces the bust of Mella that was located in the same plaza)
The inscription on the statue reads:
Plaza Patriótica
General Matías Ramón Mella
25 de Febrero de 1816 – 4 de Junio de 1864
En homenaje al Padre de la Patria,
General Matías Ramón Mella
Héroe de la Independencia y de la
Restauración de la República Dominicana,
considerado el más grande genio y
estratega militar dominicano
de todos los tiempos.
Político liberal. Independentista eterno.
