A little history…
“Sánchez was founded in 1886 and soon became a center of commerce for the Dominican Republic, as it was a maritime town with a very active port. It was the home of a train that connected the town directly to La Vega and the interior of the country. It was also home to The Royal Bank of Canada, the first bank in the country. The town is known for its picturesque Victorian houses, many of which still exist today. Sánchez is the primary entry way for excursions to the Los Haitises National Park and the mangrove laden tropical rivers of Barracote, Yuna and Colorado.”

A few aerial pictures given to me of the Parque Mirador del Sur (translated Southern Lookout Park) along Avenida Anacaona. These images also give a beautiful view of part of sprawling capital city. You can see all the way to the Caribbean Sea.

The 7 kilometer (4.35 miles) long park, designed by the Architect Eugenio Pérez Montás, is located in the southwestern part of the Dominican Republic capital of Santo Domingo. See a map and learn a little more about Parque Mirador del Sur.

Alcazar de Colon – Then and Now

I was doing a little research and came across this drawing in an old book “Santo Domingo : past and present, with a glance at Hayti”
by Hazard, Samuel, 1834-1876; Making of America Project. Published 1873.

This is the Alcázar de Colón / Columbus Castle, in ruins and the Bateria del Almirante in its entirety, as seen from Río Ozama. The image was drawn for this book so it has to be from the mid 1800’s. Note that there is no Malecon, only the port that came to the wall of the city of Santo Domingo. You can see the Puerta San Diego that leads to Las Atarazanas which is the old port loading docks and warehouses.

This is a picture taken from almost the same angle as the above drawing where you can see the Alcazar de Colón above the wall and the Bateria and Puerta San Diego. The Malecon (Avenida El Puerto or Francisco Alberto Caamaño Deñó) cutting right through the middle of the port and fort area.

In this present day picture they took out most of the Bateria del Almirante leaving a small part of this protection point when the Malecon cut through the center of the fort.

What is 4-D technology you might ask?
It is a 3 dimensional film with physical effects that that are synchronized with the film bringing it to a fourth dimension. The first film produced in 4-D was “The Sensorium” in 1984 for 6 Flags Theme Park and many other theme parks including Disney have made films using the 4-D experience. The first 4D theater in the United States opened June 2014 in Los Angeles
