Tourist flow increases 50% after opening of the Coral Highway

The Coral Highway

The Coordinator of the program of development to the tourism town Colonial of Santo Domingo, Maribel Villalona, reported that the number of tourists received by the city, increased by 50% in the last two weeks of August, with the inauguration of the highway of Coral that cuts the driving time from Santo Domingo-Punta Cana by 2 hours, and estimated that from 2015 the Dominican capital could receive around 2 million tourists per year.

Villalona explained that the future tourist flow is difficult to define, but pointed out that until July the Colonial City received each month nearly 4,000 tourists from Punta Cana, after the opening of the highway of Coral, that number rose to 6,000 tourists in August, an increase of 50%.

Thanks to these projections, it is estimated that the number of visits will increase to 8,000 for October, and that grow more during winter.

“You have to consider that the city is becoming a shopping destination with a very high level in comparison with the other islands of the Caribbean, which will feature urban and cultural tourism which has traditionally offered,” said Villalona.

Finally, Villalona stressed that by 2014 it is estimated 600,000 tourist arrivals per year to Santo Domingo, and stated that it is a possible projection because that area currently emits around 400,000 tourists to isla Saona, that until recently it was an hour from Punta tourist Cana.
